2008 Kia Rondo
The idea behind the Kia Rondo is to combine the practicality of an SUV with the look and feel of a car. And the Rondo does it, sort of, with seven seats and a profile that is, in its own awkward way, more reminiscent of a car than an SUV. So how does the Rondo work in the real world? Read on.
CAMBECE: Test Drive: 2008 Lexus RX 400h - Comfort
Plush yet supportive, the seats in the 2008 Lexus RX 400h suited most editors. In keeping with this Lexus' luxury-, not sport-minded intentions, the side bolsters aren't as pronounced as you'll see with some other midsize luxury SUVs. As opposed to gripping you, they gently wrap around and allow for easier ingress and egress. On a couple hours' drive, we had no complaints as far as our backs, and backsides, were concerned.
The backseat sits up high enough to provide thigh support for all but the tallest passengers and it also slides and reclines to optimize comfort. There is no third-row seat option.
With power tilt-and-telescoping functions, the steering wheel could be fine-tuned to provide an ideal driving position for all our staffers, who range from 5-foot-5 to 6-foot-3. However, a greater range of seat travel would be appreciated — a common Toyota/Lexus complaint.
Test Drive: 2008 BMW 1 Series
Comfort
For a car that offers such impressive performance and handling, the 2008 BMW 135i is surprisingly comfy and serene to live with on a daily basis. Wind noise in particular is muted, with nary a roar nor a whistle when traveling on the highway at 80 mph. Road noise is also rather subdued considering the car's low-profile tires.
Test Drive: 2009 Audi A4 3.2 Quattro - Comfort
The cabin of the 2009 Audi A4 successfully combines both sporty and luxurious attributes. The meaty steering wheel is easy to handle and adds to the sporty feel, yet it isn't too bulky. The front sport seats offer plenty of support, and extra bolsters help during cornering. The range of adjustability of the driver seat, however, leaves something to be desired — it goes just far enough forward for a 5-foot-4 female to comfortably reach the pedals. Tall folks didn't find much to complain about, though. Legroom is plentiful in both front and rear seats, and there is ample headroom.
On the comfort side, the dual-zone climate control system adjusts quickly and efficiently, and the premium 505-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system with 14 speakers and a six-CD changer offers near-pristine audio quality. The result is a pretty solid road-trip car — even after a six-hour drive, both driver and passenger felt comfortable and content, even if a little numb on the backside.
